Event Access and Inclusion Project

8 May 2014

Making events more accessible

Making major and community events more accessible and inclusive for everyone is part of the NSW Government’s commitment to better service delivery.

The Government’s Event Access and Inclusion initiatives focuses on the needs and priorities of people with disability and those with reduced access to venues and events.

These accessibility and inclusion initiatives identity better ways to meet the needs and priorities of people with disability through the process of feedback and ongoing consultation. It also recognises that access to venues and events may present challenges or barriers to participation for many sections of the community and a holistic approach is required to embed best practice.

With Australia’s ageing population, many families with young children and one in five people with a disability, access is a mainstream issue. The project’s goal is to provide guidance in the development of the accessible and inclusive event overlay and infrastructure, as well as the delivery of quality accessible services such as transport, well-trained staff, and clear event communications and information.

The Government is encouraging major event stakeholders to work together to mobilise existing resources, share knowledge and best practice strategies, and identify major gaps in current practices.
