NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell today announced the Cahill Expressway in Sydney will be renamed the
'Tim Cahill Expressway' ahead of the Socceroos' FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Iraq at ANZ
Stadium tomorrow night.
Mr O’Farrell was today joined by Socceroo Tim Cahill for the announcement and unveiling of the ‘Tim Cahill Expressway’ banner in front of the motorway at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
Mr O’Farrell said: “Tim Cahill is one of Sydney’s favourite sons and a great ambassador for our city wherever he plays around the world - this is a fitting gesture ahead of one of the biggest games in Australian football history,” Mr O’Farrell said.
“Tim is one of our greatest Socceroos. He was the first Australian ever to score at a World Cup, in Germany in 2006, and if he scores tomorrow night against Iraq at ANZ Stadium, Tim will equal the record for the most number of goals in Socceroos history.
“In honour of Tim’s potential milestone, and the significance of tomorrow night’s FIFA World Cup Qualifier in Sydney, I am delighted to rename the Cahill Expressway the ‘Tim Cahill Expressway’ from now until full time tomorrow night.
“The NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, is a strategic partner for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers. We’re delighted the Australian public has embraced this game which is now a sell out.”
“All eyes will be on Sydney tomorrow night and if you’re not lucky enough to have a ticket all the action can be seen live on Fox Sports.
“I wish Tim and his Socceroos teammates the very best as they play to send Australia to our third consecutive FIFA World Cup in Brazil next year.”
Responding to The Premier, Cahill said: “I am extremely grateful and humbled by this wonderful gesture by The Premier and the NSW Government in renaming the Cahill Expressway in my name and in honour of the Socceroos.
“Tomorrow night is a huge night for the Socceroos, and for me personally, as we push to qualify for Brazil 2014 and without the support of the NSW people, and all Australians, we would not be in this position.
“I’d also like to thank Fox Sports for their role in the renaming of the Expressway and for their continual support of the Socceroos.
“Finally but most importantly I’d like to thank our fans, who have given us incredible support through our qualifying campaign, particularly over the past three weeks and we hope we can repay you for your faith and support in the team by getting us to Brazil next year.”
Cahill, who was raised in Bexley, has amassed 28 international goals for Australia, equal with current
teammate Archie Thompson and one goal behind all-time Socceroos leading scorer Damian Mori (29).

FFA urges fans to leave the car at home and travel to the match on public transport to avoid delays and make sure you don't miss a minute of this historic occasion.
Travel on public transport to and from the game is included in all tickets for the match. Pre-match entertainment starts at 6.20pm and the teams warm up from 6.50pm. Kick-off is 7.30pm.
