Some of the world's best golfers will visit Sydney for the Australian Open from 17 – 20 November 2016.
2 November 2016The high-profile line-up includes 2014 champion and world No. 4 Jordan Spieth, world No. 7 Adam Scott and defending champion Matt Jones, who will vie for the Stonehaven Cup at the stunning Royal Sydney Golf Course.
It’s the 15th time Royal Sydney has hosted The Australian Open since the prestigious tournament began in 1904. The course is a short iron from magnificent Sydney Harbour, but by no means the only fairway in the state to offer a memorable NSW golf experience.
Ahead of the November 17 tee-off, Destination NSW has rounded up some of NSW’s best golf courses:
New South Wales Golf Club, Sydney
New South Wales Golf Club is one of the most picturesque courses in the country, situated on the rugged cliffs at La Perouse and overlooking Botany Bay.
According to one of Australia’s all-time greatest players and 2009 Australian Open champion Adam Scott, playing at NSW is an exceptional experience for golf-enthusiasts. “I have so many special memories at this golf course, highlighted by my Australian Open win in 2009. The overall experience of the New South Wales Golf Club is exceptional, especially in good weather. The greens overlook the ocean, the course is challenging and the place is stunning,” he said.

Long Reef Golf Club, Sydney
The commanding beachfront position of Long Reef Golf Course boasts unsurpassed views all the way to the Central Coast. When the wind is blowing, Long Reef is one of the toughest tests in golf but one of the most rewarding with golfing legend Peter Thomson describing it as “The best site of any golf course in Sydney”.
While on the Northern Beaches, hit one of the world-famous surf breaks or enjoy a swim in the ocean pool at Freshwater. Further north is Barrenjoey Headland, offering panoramic views of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, the Central Coast and Broken Bay.
The Vintage Golf Club, Hunter Valley
The Vintage Golf Club was designed by Greg Norman, and is one of the most creative and challenging courses in Australia due to the number of water hazards. It’s a true test of golf, with its wide fairways winding through the vineyards.
For visitors looking to play and stay, The Vintage’s Château Élan and Grand Mercure Apartments line the 10th Fairway, offering luxury and comfort. The region also offers high quality food and wine experiences, famous Hunter Valley Semillon and Shiraz, and many cellar doors.
Bonville Golf Resort, Coffs Harbour
Bonville is a beautiful golf course with towering gum trees that line the fairway. It’s always in impeccable condition, and playing golf while being surrounded by Australian species including Koalas and Kookaburras, is a truly rewarding experience.
Coffs Harbour offers gorgeous beaches and a range of water and adventure sports including skydiving, scuba diving, and game fishing. Between May and November Humpback whales can be spotted during their annual migration north.
