Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley, and the Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris, welcomed the selection of Stadium Australia and Newcastle Stadium as venues for the 2015 Asian Cup.
28 March 2013“Football continues to grow in popularity in Australia and the Asian Cup will provide a wonderful opportunity for NSW to host some of the world’s best players.
“Australia’s performances as a footballing nation have resulted in consecutive World Cup appearances in 2006 and 2010 highlighting the growth and potential of the code,” Mr Annesley added.
Newcastle Stadium will host the following matches:
- two qualifying matches
- Second semi final on 27 January
- 3rd v 4th playoff on 30 January 2015
Stadium Australia will play host to the:
- Socceroos’ qualifying game on January 13
- Quarter final scheduled for January 23
- First semi final on 26 January
- Final on 31 January 2015
Minister Souris said NSW stadiums would provide international teams and visitors with world class facilities and a memorable stay in our wonderful state.
“The events will also provide a major economic boost for both Newcastle and Sydney.
“To ensure success off the field, a steering committee has been established to provide recommendations and advice to the NSW Government.
“The Committee, chaired by the former Director-General of Sydney 2000, David Richmond AO, will maximise the benefits associated with this international event including tourism and employment opportunities,” Mr Souris said.
